eco printPrinting onto fabric with only materials from nature—leaves, flowers, twigs, etc—is a magical experience. In this class students will learn the basics of eco printing including the importance of proper preparation, types of processing techniques. Students will also experiment with mordants, tannins and a variety of vegetation that will ultimately lead to successful printing. Although students are asked to bring a variety of leaves to class, we will also forage to identify and collect plants for printing. Emphasis will be placed on safety, best practice procedures, environmental factors and plant characteristics. The final project will be printing on a 14” x 72” silk scarf. This is a relaxed, fun-filled class so come prepared to experience the wonders of eco printing!

This workshop is paired with the August 18 Medium Print: Eco Print with Color class. While it is not necessary to take both classes, they work well together giving students a full range of techniques in eco print dyeing.

Materials Fee: $25 for 14 x 72” silk scarf. Various mordants including alum, modifiers, tannins.

Registration: Members $100, Non-members $120

Instructor: Patricia Spangler
