We will explore the range of color obtained by a few of the dye plants that can be grown or harvested in our region, such as weld, marigold, madder root, and black walnut. We will learn how to dye with these plants, exploring how pH, mordants and over dyeing will shift the color. We will create an elaborate sample book with wool, cotton, and silk. All mordanting will be done prior to class, but I will share the mordant processes used to create the samples.
