Most spinners have thought about buying a raw fleece, but are intimidated by the process. Or perhaps, like me, you bought a beautiful multi-colored one and sent it off to a mill, only to receive something back that looks like oatmeal. The purpose of this workshop is to de-mystify the process of preparing your own fleece and get you ready to buy, clean and card or comb a fleece with confidence. We'll go through each of these steps together: 1) skirting, 2) rinsing, 3) washing or scouring, 4) drying and 5) combing or carding. This month we start with wool - and have a Montadale fleece to work with that's been donated by local shepherd Susan Proctor. Susan is also chair of the North Carolina Sheep Producers Association, a SAFF winner for both her sheep and fleece, and wants us to all consider entering their "Make It With Wool" competition in November. http://www.ncmakeitwithwool.com/
