Procion dyes are easy to use and offer a full range of saturated colors, tints, shades and neutrals. With just a touch of color theory, you will easily find inspiration for color schemes. Thickened dyes are applied directly onto swatches of natural fabrics in an improvisational/painterly manner using a variety of processes (pouring, scouring, “squeegeeing,” using fun “tools,” etc.). This application process results in more non-objective and abstracted designs. However, thickened dyes also allow detailed and realistic imagery if that’s your preference. Fabric swatches range in size from 8”x10” – 22”x22” and include a mix of natural cottons, rayons, and high-end silks. Viewing samples of previously dyed fabrics will provide insights for how dyes look different on various types of cloth and with varying weaves and textures. Through demonstrations you will see how easy it is to apply the dyes. There will be two dye-painting sessions followed by overnight batching before washing out and drying your beautiful swatches. Handouts are provided so you can get back to the information shared in class. Your dyed fabrics are great for quilting, embroidery, clothing, and other various art projects. Examples of finished art works using this dye process with embellished stitching are also shared. This low-pressure-with-big-results class is for everyone, new or experienced in dyeing.
