A Textile Book Club is something we’ve been wanting to try for a long time. We’ve selected Worn: A People’s History of Cloth by Sofi Thanhauser because it deals with some of the issues discussed during the early conversations of what became Local Cloth. The book takes on five fibers - linen, cotton, silk, synthetics, and wool - and discusses the environmental, social, and economic issues of the production and use of these textiles in the west. It provides an overview of these issues but is also filled with the personal stories of those involved in the making of textiles and how their lives were and have been affected. Get your copies from your favorite local independent bookstore or online independent source. BYOB! And start thinking about what we should read next.
The first two meetings of the Textile Study Group for 2024 will be on ZOOM to take advantage of a presenter who has moved out of state and give participants a stay at home option.
