This workshop introduces creators to the basics of US Copyright Law, explaining how it protects original works while allowing for reuse of others’ creations in one’s new designs. We will explore the Fair Use exception in depth, gaining experience performing a four factors evaluation and learning best practices to navigate uncertain situations. We will also survey the vast trove of works that are “free for the taking” in the Public Domain or available with a Creative Commons license. A combination of illustrated slide presentations, interactive exercises, small group discussion, and online searching will offer the opportunity to gain competence and confidence when handling culture and knowledge. Participants are encouraged to bring a wireless-compatible device for the hands on exercises.
Students should bring: Wireless compatible and fully charged compatible tablet or laptop. Participants are encouraged to bring a prepared bag lunch to eat during workshop because we will not break for lunch.
