Precision in Sashiko: Corners, Curves, and Intersections

Designed for stitchers who have mastered basic sashiko, this six-hour workshop focuses on the small decisions that give complex patterns a polished, intentional appearance. Through demonstrations and guided practice, participants will learn how to plan stitch placement and maintain rhythm when approaching sharp turns, 90-degree corners, tight curves, intersections, and T-junctions. We will explore strategies for avoiding crowded corners, overlapping stitches, awkward gaps, and heavy-looking intersections while preserving the characteristic balance of stitched and unstitched space.

Participants will apply these techniques in two focused exercises. First, they will stitch *tsuzuki yamagata* (continuous mountain peaks), using its angular, connected lines to practice sharp turns, corners, and orderly intersections. A second exercise featuring *seigaiha* (overlapping ocean waves) will develop control around tight, repeated curves and closely spaced meeting points. Along the way, students will practice reading the path of a pattern, deciding where stitches should begin and end, and making adjustments without disrupting the overall design. Participants should arrive comfortable with basic sashiko tools, running stitch, and stitching from a marked pattern.
